A Slice of the Good Life

Feb 18, 2016

Winterville is a small town with big potential. Our town boasts a population of almost 10,000 residents with a median age of 34. This means that this place is hustling and bustling with families and young professionals. With or without little ones, Winterville is able to deliver community engagement on almost every level. The town hosts some great events that draw out large crowds not only from Winterville, but also from surrounding areas. Winterville is certainly the up-and-coming place to be.

The Big Festival

The Watermelon Festival is a three day event that is typically held in late August at the Winterville Parks and Recreation campus. There is live entertainment each night beginning on Thursday and carnival rides for the little ones (and those not so little ones that are young at heart), as well as vendors from all over that set up booths for some good old fashioned retail therapy. Many of the surrounding neighborhoods, including ours, can walk from their homes to enjoy the festivities. Neighbors on almost every street near the area host cook-outs and share a night of fun for all ages together as friends. They also hoist those lawn chairs down the road to the Watermelon Festival parade route Saturday morning to enjoy the sights of some great floats, local groups and of course the Watermelon Queen. It’s the festival we look forward to all year!

Recreational Activites

Winterville Parks and Recreation offers a variety of activities from youth sports to a Golden Age Senior Program. There is line dancing, soccer, football, cheerleading and special one-time events like the Daddy-Daughter Dance. The town’s Parks and Recreation department really takes the time to think of ways to include everyone in the community and strengthens the bonds between neighbors. Our kids are able to play on the same teams as friends and many of us can walk to the games. You just can’t beat that small town charm.

Fun Events for the Community

Probably one of our favorite things to do in Winterville is head down to the Movie in the Park or the Music in the Park on Friday nights during the warmer months. The town amphitheater fills up on these evening with kids and adults alike to enjoy some weekend fun that’s free of charge. The movies are family friendly, but be sure to get there early to reserve some good seats! The Music in the Park events typically have music that all age groups can enjoy and you’ll want to be there early for those as well. You are more than welcome to bring your picnic basket and enjoy the entertainment for the evening with neighbors and friends. These nights are some of our favorites because it draws Winterville residents together and gives us all something to look forward to at the end of a long week.

Easy Commute

Many of the residents in Winterville commute to Greenville and outlying areas for work. The average travel time for these commuters is about 21 minutes which gets them home relatively quickly after a long day at the office. Winterville gets you out of the city for quieter living at an enjoyable pace, but also allows its’ citizens to have easy access to the things they need, when they need it.

Hot Spots

While Winterville doesn’t have a ton of local hot spots to eat, we have a few that we adore. You can enjoy the freshest Oysters when they are in season at Wimpie’s Steam Bar and Grill located in the downtown area. Just in case oysters aren’t your thing, they also offer other dishes and a full bar for everyone to enjoy. If you like it fried, you’ll love Dixie Queen Seafood which is right next door. This is southern soul food at its best! One of our favorite hangouts in Winterville is definitely the Coffee Shack on Beacon Dr. Don’t let the name fool you, the Coffee Shack offers way more than just a strong dose of caffeine the morning. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here, as well as delicious craft beers and wine. They host live music nights and wine tastings from time to time so be sure to check them out. All of these places are locally owned and run and we love to support our neighbors so if you are in town, go by and say hello.
